About public hearings

Public consultation is an important part of a committee inquiry.  Parliamentary  committees hold hearings to hear from people with experience or expertise relevant to an inquiry.

Public hearings are generally recorded in a written transcript to provide the committee an accurate record of the proceedings.

Members of the public are welcome to come and listen. Registering to attend a public hearing helps inform the committee secretariat of facilities requirements at the venue.

You can also indicate that you are willing to speak at a hearing. Registering to participate assists the committee to organise the hearing program and ensures statements are correctly attributed to the individual who made them. Generally, each scheduled participant will have an opportunity to share some comments before committee members ask questions.

Allocated speaking opportunities are limited. If you are allocated a speaking opportunity, the committee secretariat will contact you and confirm a scheduled time slot.

If you wish to share your views privately rather than in public, please contact the committee’s secretariat. Please also be aware that you may be filmed or photographed while participating in the public hearing.
